A Time to Reflect and Spring into Birth

“In silence is the birth of a creative idea.” —Dr. Mike Riera, child psychologist and author

I’ve found so much good happens in intentional, silent moments. Reflection. New understanding. Writing. We wove all these together in a virtual session under the direction of creativity coach Natalie Cramer. Her prompts were organized around a timely theme, spring. She encouraged us not to censor ourselves, even consider thoughts that seemed scary or like gibberish. Some of her questions are below:

1.     Spring is a time of cleaning and rebirth. What thoughts or habits do you want to leave behind?

2.     What lessons have you learned from winter?

3.     What is getting ready to sprout in your life?

4.     What seeds will you plant this season for summer and fall?

5.     What are your favorite springtime activities?

A few ideas kept surfacing for me during the 45 mostly silent minutes. Birds chirping outside my window spurred me to think of being in its most natural form — free, unguarded, joyful, God’s offspring. I started to sense new birth coming in various forms: planting literal seeds in my backyard, developing new skills, forging lasting connections. I want to leave behind frustration, limitation, and perfectionism. As I enjoy my favorite springtime activities — walking and writing — I look forward to seeing how these ideas coalesce into action.
