Techniques to Move Past Creative Blocks

As a writer, I don’t like staring at a blank page for too long. But I accept that moving beyond writer’s block takes patience. These days, my go-to approach is writing emails to friends, family, and coworkers. The details I share there usually move my mind to the point that I can focus on other writing pursuits — nonfiction articles, short vignettes, longer-form fiction, and more.

Creativity coach Natalie Cramer recently introduced me to three methods I plan to try now.

Freewriting for five minutes, as in just writing whatever comes to thought. More unstructured and raw than letter writing, this practice could help me process and work out personal problems turning in my subconscious.

Meditation to clear my mind of distractions and help me reconnect with myself. Natalie shared her Spotify playlist.

Doodling and coloring to give myself latitude to make whatever. However terrible — or brilliant — that turns out to be, the point is to have fun with my creativity, without critique.

I can’t wait to see what happens!

If you struggle to move past your own creative blocks, consider joining Natalie’s creative cocoon for professionals to slip into creative flow. The next six-month membership period kicks off June 15.
